What Video Resolution Means for Screenshots
When we say a video is "1080p" or "4K," we are describing the number of pixels in each individual frame. A 1080p video has frames that are 1920ร1080 pixels โ about 2 megapixels per frame. A 4K video has frames that are 3840ร2160 pixels โ about 8 megapixels per frame. For screenshots, resolution translates directly into detail: more pixels means you can crop and zoom without the result looking pixelated, text in the frame is more readable, and the image can be printed at larger sizes without quality loss.
Common Video Resolutions and Screenshot Sizes
- 480p (SD): 854ร480 โ suitable only for small web thumbnails
- 720p (HD): 1280ร720 โ acceptable for social media, inadequate for print
- 1080p (Full HD): 1920ร1080 โ standard quality, suitable for most uses
- 1440p (2K/QHD): 2560ร1440 โ excellent quality for high-end monitors

How Screenshots Online Determines Your Screenshot Resolution
When you load a video file, the browser's decoder reads the file's native resolution directly from the metadata. For web publishing, JPEG at 95% quality provides an excellent balance of quality and file size. For print and archival, always use PNG. When in doubt, PNG is the safe default โ you can always convert to JPEG later, but you cannot recover quality lost during JPEG compression.
